In 2004, a group of dedicated prosecutors convened a pivotal meeting. Their mission: to establish an organization providing crucial support for victims of sexual offenses, with a particular focus on young children. These visionary individuals formed the foundational membership of what would soon blossom into the Samoa Victim Support Group (SVSG)
With the crucial backing of former Police Commissioner Sonny Schuster, who held significant sway within the ex-police association, Commissioner Lorenese and the group of prosecutors arranged a pivotal meeting with that very association. The women of the ex-police association embraced the challenge, collaborating closely with the prosecutors to lay the groundwork for what would become the Samoa Victim Support Group (SVSG).
In a pivotal moment for SVSG, then Prime Minister Tuilaepa, recognizing the immense potential of this burgeoning organization, granted them the use of the ground floor of the old government building as its very first office. This significant gesture provided SVSG with a crucial initial foothold. The ribboncutting ceremony, performed by Taulapapa Brenda Heather-Latu, officially opened the doors to SVSG's inaugural office, marking the true beginning of its journey to support victims in Samoa.
The Samoa Victim Support Group (SVSG) moved from the government building to the old courthouse in Apia, Samoa, in 2006.
Driven by an unwavering commitment, two young men, Nelson J and Vaai J, tirelessly scoured and canvassed the entirety of Samoa. Their relentless search was for the perfect parcel of land to build the nation's first dedicated shelter for children. Their efforts culminated in the gracious lease of land from the Samoa Land Corporation, laying the foundation for what would become the transformative Campus of Hope. To this day, the legacy of their vision continues, with numerous donors taking turns to cover the yearly lease, ensuring the Campus of Hope remains a beacon of safety and care for Samoa's children.
SVSG has launched campaigns like the "Positive Movement, " which encourages survivors to share their stories and inspire others to overcome adversity. SVSG established a network of village representatives who work to implement strategies at the local level to combat violence against women. these village reps became the core support for SVSG. 2010: First campaign against rape In partnership with the Government, and encouraged by Ken Newton, SVSG launched the first campaign against rape in Samoa. Samoan Entrepreneur Ken Newton recognized the profound importance of SVSG's work to society. His belief in the cause led him to become deeply involved, bringing his entire family into the heart of SVSG's mission. Their collective dedication has been an invaluable asset to the organization's efforts.

In a landmark moment for SVSG, Tuisuga, the organization's esteemed and only official patron, launched its very first rehabilitation program. This pivotal initiative marked the beginning of SVSG's dedicated efforts in restorative justice. Since then, in close partnership with the Courts of Samoa, SVSG has successfully implemented numerous rehabilitation programs, specifically addressing anger management within the context of family violence.
The School of Hope, nestled within the Campus of Hope, stands as a testament to transformative partnerships. This vital educational initiative was sparked by a visit from students of Helensvale High School. Subsequently, the Surfers Sunrise Rotary Club in Gold Coast, Australia, in collaboration with SVSG, brought this dream to fruition, building a dedicated school on the campus to nurture the futures of its residents.

A compassionate friend of SVSG from the Gold Coast, Australia, envisioned and funded a vital addition to the Campus of Hope: a dedicated home for the older children. This generous initiative brought to life the House of Dreams, which continues to provide a safe and nurturing shelter for older children to this day
Since its opening, this vital building has served as a sanctuary, providing safe shelter to over 4,000 young girls. Its doors remain open, continuing to offer refuge and support to more girls in need, standing as a beacon of hope and protection.
Through the gracious approval of then Prime Minister Tuilaepa, the Samoa Land Corporation leased the former police building to SVSG. This historic site now proudly serves as the central office for the Samoa Victim Support Group. Recognizing the building's deteriorating state, the Embassy of Japan generously donated funds to SVSG for its complete renovation. This crucial support ensured that SVSG could establish a wellequipped and accessible operating office in the heart of town, further solidifying its presence and reach. due to limited resources, people volunteered to work for free in clearing up the building.

2016 - 2018: Breaking New Ground: The Nofotane Project This groundbreaking initiative marked a significant first for SVSG: a dedicated project aimed at recognizing and empowering marginalized and vulnerable members of society, specifically by addressing the root causes of domestic violence. Named the Nofotane Project, this vital work was undertaken in a powerful partnership with the UN Women Trust Fund, marking a pivotal step towards a more equitable and violence-free community.
In a groundbreaking academic endeavor, SVSG, under the leadership of Professor Jenevieve Mannel, embarked on a comprehensive four-year research study to gather crucial evidence for violence prevention. This significant research, titled “E LE SAUA LE ALOFA”, was a collaborative effort in partnership with the University College London and the National University of Samoa, and generously funded by UKRI.
The Sakura House stands as a critical lifeline, being the first and only shelter in Samoa dedicated to supporting women who are victims of domestic violence, serving the entire nation. Built through the generous support of the Embassy of Japan, this vital shelter provides refuge, though due to limited resources, women can typically be accommodated for up to 14 days. It remains a constantly busy and essential sanctuary for those fleeing violence.
In 2023, a wonderful new addition brought immense joy to the Campus of Hope! Pacific Assist, in partnership with the LDS Church, generously built a brand-new playground for the children. This vibrant space provides a much-needed outlet for play, laughter, and development, further enhancing the Campus of Hope as a nurturing environment for the children under SVSG's care.
The Campus of Hope now boasts a vital new addition: the Psychosocial and Medical Centre. This crucial facility is Sister Jacinta’s vision, dedicated to supporting the rehabilitation and mental health of the children and all residents at the Campus of Hope. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated Humanitarian Experience Group from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Utah USA. Their hard work and passion made this essential facility possible. This momentous opening, coinciding with World Mental Health Day 2024, serves as a powerful reminder of the profound importance of mental wellness in our community.
A significant addition to the Campus of Hope, the Queen Camilla Pre-School of Hope, was proudly built in 2024through a powerful partnership between the LDS Church and the Pacific Assist Trust. The LDS Church stands as one of SVSG's most enduring and invaluable partners, having consistently provided crucial support for over two decades. Their contributions include vehicles for SVSG operations, dedicated teachers for the school, essential dental care for the children, and visiting doctors from America. Furthermore, they ensure the Campus's well-being by providing food supplies when stocks run low, and various LDS wards take turns meticulously cleaning the campus and mowing the grass, ensuring a consistently clean and enjoyable home for the children.
