the SVSG Youth Executive Committee had the privilege of attending the BBC Media
Action (BBCMA)-Supported Media Workshop and Elections Press Club held at the USP
Samoa Campus, Alafua. The event was themed “The Next Wave: Youth, First-Time
Candidates, and Samoa’s Changing Political Landscape.”
This pre-election initiative is a collaborative effort between BBC Media Action
(BBCMA), the Journalists Association of Western Samoa (JAWS), the University of the
South Pacific (USP), and the National University of Samoa (NUS). The programme aims
to strengthen democratic engagement and enhance media capacity in the lead-up to
Samoa’s general election.
The workshop emphasized the importance of young people understanding their rights and responsibilities within Samoa’s political environment. It encouraged youth participation
and highlighted the vital role youth voices play in shaping the nation’s future.
As echoed during the event: “The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow.”
